Facebook redesign, has it happened?

Posted by Shawn Jooste in July 22nd 2008

We’ve been waiting for the new Facebook look and feel for a little while now, and I suspect today it’s happened.

Some people are reporting the new look and feel, but I still get the usual look.

Post in the comments if your profile has changed.

Dabbleboard is a nice place to dabble

Posted by Shawn Jooste in July 22nd 2008

Dabbleboard is one of the more useful and functional web 2.0 sites that I have seen.

dabbleboard.jpg

It’s a blank piece of canvas that you can scribble on. A nice place to do a quick mockup of an idea or a concept. Once you’ve done your sketch or dabble you can download it as a PNG file and put it on your blog, or you can share it and make it publicly available.

It’s the sort of thing I can see myself using quite a bit. If I’m trying to get a concept across to someone I can sketch it, share it, and then IM them the URL. They can look at it, even modify it, and then we have a better visual idea of what we’re discussing.

It’s also useful for making a quick graphic for a blog. If you want to mash up a few images and add some notes for a blog post this is a very very useful tool to do that with.

BubbleComment makes reviewing websites a sinch

Posted by Shawn Jooste in July 22nd 2008

I spend a lot of time online, and hours looking at and reviewing sites. What’s very refreshing to know is that there are still sites that make me go wow.

200807212145.jpg

Bubblecomment is a very very nifty site that allows you to review a site using your webcam and your mic. So you can view a site, make comments, and share thoughts. Then once you’re done it saves it all and gives you a link you can share with others. It’s a social media sharing site like most others except that it’s really cool the way it does the Audio Video thing.

Have a look, and share some links in the comments.

ToldYa!

Posted by Shawn Jooste in July 22nd 2008

Toldya is an Ad Network with some pretty big names in their inventory. They create shopping type ads that work well on sites that deal with gadgets and the like.

200807212123.jpg

The have a publisher and an advertiser section. It’s free to join, and you get accepted immediately. So they are out of beta.

The widgets have a very nice look about them, and are very well designed. So they don’t look kitsch and spoil you nicely designed site.

Sazell Beta Invites

Posted by Shawn Jooste in July 21st 2008

200807212044.jpg

I mentioned Sazell a while ago, and have now arranged some beta invites from them. Sazell reminds me of Digg, only it grabs a snapshot, and then relates it to other items that have been snapped.

200807212046.jpg

You fill in the URL, and it grabs all the relevant data from the site and fills in as many fields as it can. This then ads the page or site to the database.

When you go to your snapshots you’ll see the sites that you have snapped and also some sites that are related:

200807212057.jpg

Sites are shared between friends, and people can follow you much like on Twitter and FriendFeed.

Sazell has some really great potential, and I like the inter-activeness of the site.

To join Sazell you need an invite.

Leave a comment below, and I’ll send you the invite code.

Zendesk takes the hassle out of Support

Posted by Shawn Jooste in July 21st 2008

200807211202.jpg

I’ve been an IT consultant for many many years, and have run an IT support company. One of the biggest challenges that I have faced is the ability to effectively manage the work load and communicate with customers. I’ve looked at and tried dozens of Help Desk systems. Some of them have been brilliant, some of them… not so much.

Zendesk so far has proved to be one of the best that I have looked at. It’s hosted, so I have nothing to configure and sort out from my side. It’s got a simple quick setup, so getting your first account going is very very simple. And in the spirit of Web 2.0 it has the ‘free’ account that allows you limited, but functional use of the system.

The accounts range from $19 a month to $349 per month depending on the size of your organization and your requirements.

The interface and layout is great, it’s easy to use yet powerful. I imagine someone beginning to use the system as they begin to setup an IT Support business, and Zendesk can grow with them as their business grows. On their blog they mention iPhone support. This will be a real winner, if a system like this is available to your reps on the road via their iPhones.

If you needs a help desk system, this is a real must to try out.

Trading Your Console Games

Posted by Shawn Jooste in July 21st 2008

200807211131.jpg

A friend of mine tipped me off on this site.

The Gamers Exchange is a site dedicated to helping gamers trade games they have already played.

The way it works is quite simple. I have an Xbox 360, and I’ve just finished playing Need for Speed Carbon. I want to play something else, but don’t feel like splashing out R500 for a new game, and having NFS lie around for the next decade. So I simply ship them the game I have finished playing, and they let me choose a game they have, and ship it to me. With some games it’s a free trade, with other games you need to pay in a little. It’s a brilliant site that brings together something that people have been doing on an ad-hoc basis for ages. New games are very very pricey, and you rarely replay games.

There are a few games I would not get grid of, Gears of War being one of them, Halo 3, and possibly Assassins Creed. But the rest of the games I play, I want to get rid of once I’m done with them.

If you live in South Africa, have a look.

Capzles Lets You Capture A Moment In Time

Posted by Shawn Jooste in July 21st 2008

200807211105.jpg

Capzles.com is a site that allows you to add capsules of things in a moment of time. Much like other social media sites, it allows you to connect to friends, share things with those friends, and also allows you to see stuff that is highly rated by other people.

It comes in a very very nice interface with lots of Ajaxy type stuff what works quite well. It’s a nice site to poke around and find some fascinating content.

A good example of what Capzles does is this History of the Apple Computer. It shows you shots of the Apple Computer from different moments in time. It’s sorta like a graphical, timeline 2.0.

200807211106.jpg

It’s free to sign up, and you don’t need any beta codes or invites. If anyone is using Capzles, leave a link in the comments, I’d like to see how you are using it.

Wordcamp SA

Posted by Shawn Jooste in July 21st 2008

200807211047.jpg

Next month Wordcamp is coming to Cape Town. I’m looking forward to getting together and meeting a lot of people that I have come to know online over the last year.

It seems that they have finally sorted out their venue, and you can register for the event.

This, seriously, is not to be missed. If you’re in Cape Town, or near an airport that can fly you to Cape Town, you wanna make sure you’re here.

Twiddla: not quite the twiddle you’d think.

Posted by Shawn Jooste in July 21st 2008

So Twiddla looks like a fantastic service. If only it worked. I gave it a bash in Firefox 3, and it kept bombing out. I’ll revist the site in a few months and see if they have fixed it.

I like the concept of being able to create a quick meeting, invite a bunch of people and collaborate. The internet needs more sites that are quick and easy to use, but deliver great value. I do not want to create accounts everywhere I go, and I often get put off by the detailed and involved sign up forms.

Give Twiddla a try, I’d like to see what you think.
