Ericsson to pioneer mobile communication across Maersk vessel fleet

By Admin on January 17, 2012

Telecom technology and services company Ericsson has been appointed to install end-to-end systems integration and deployment of mobile and satellite communications throughout shipping company Maersks vessel fleet.

The introduction of Ericssons integrated maritime mobile and very-small-aperture terminal satellite solution would allow the Maersk liner immediate access to remote expertise and improved efficiency in the vessels daily operations.

The system offered new ways of communicating and contributing to efficiency, reliability and cost reduction.

Maersk was planning to introduce Ericsson antennas and GSM base stations to about 400 of its vessels over the next two years, with upgrades to be made to the remaining 100 vessels soon after, Ericsson said in a statement on Friday.

Further, Ericsson has been contracted as part of the agreement to provide seven years of global managed services support, including 24/7 network monitoring and onboard maintenance services at a large number of ports across all major regions.

Maersk Lines high-tech modern container ships have historically been equipped with satellite connectivity primarily intended to support communication for vital shipboard functions.
